Interaction Between Waves and Turbulence Within the Nocturnal Boundary Layer

چکیده

Abstract The presence of waves is proven to be ubiquitous within nocturnal stable boundary layers over complex terrain, where turbulence in a continuous, although weak, state activity. typical approach based on Reynolds decomposition unable disaggregate from contributions, thus hiding any information about the production/destruction energy injected/subtracted by wave motion. We adopt triple-decomposition mean, wave, and contributions near-surface boundary-layer flows, with aim unveiling role motion as source and/or sink kinetic potential energies respective explicit budgets. By exploring balance between buoyancy (driving waves) shear turbulence), simple interpretation paradigm introduced distinguish two layers, namely near-ground far-ground sublayer, estimating can significantly feed or fed wave. To prove this paradigm, valley flow used case study detail motions budgets sublayers. From dataset, are calculated, relying variance–covariance analysis further comprehend each sublayer. With investigation, we propose scheme capture interpret extent interaction layers.

Noctuid migration in Texas within the nocturnal aeroecological boundary layer.

Long-distance migration of adult corn earworm moths (Helicoverpa zea), and several other noctuid moth species, facilitates seasonal expansion of pest populations and consequent increased infestations of agricultural crops on a continental scale in North America. Long-term field studies of population dynamics and migratory flights of H. zea and fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) in the United...

Interaction layer between a turbulent boundary layer and free-stream turbulence

The interaction between a turbulent free-stream and a turbulent boundary layer is investigated through particle image velocimetry measurements. An ‘interaction layer’ located between 0.12 ≤ y/δ ≤ 0.19, at the end of the log layer, is identified whereby the kinetic energy in this layer describes the flow above it. Conditional averages about the interaction layer indicate that it is home to peaks...

Planetary Boundary Layer Turbulence

In previous chapters boundary layers were evident as thin layers across which thermal, dynamic, and material properties of a free interior flow make a transition to their boundary values and/or boundary fluxes. In those cases the thinness of the boundary layer was typically a statement of the smallness of the relevant diffusivity; e.g., the depth h of the laminar Ekman boundary layer scales as ...

Observations of Flow and Turbulence in the Nocturnal Boundary Layer over a Slope

Measurements were conducted on an eastern slope of the Salt Lake Basin (SLB) as a part of the Vertical Transport and Mixing Experiment (VTMX) conducted in October 2000. Of interest was the nocturnal boundary layer on a slope (in particular, katabatic flows) in the absence of significant synoptic influence. Extensive measurements of mean flow, turbulence, temperature, and solar radiation were ma...

The Cessation of Continuous Turbulence as Precursor of the Very Stable Nocturnal Boundary Layer

The mechanism behind the collapse of turbulence in the evening as a precursor to the onset of the very stable boundary layer is investigated. To this end a cooled, pressure-driven flow is investigated by means of a local similarity model. Simulations reveal a temporary collapse of turbulence whenever the surface heat extraction, expressed in its nondimensional form h/L, exceeds a critical value...
